NetJapan, Inc., (Jiang, Guan Cheng, President/CEO, its principal office located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, Japan) today released its disc imaging backup tool for Linux server named ActiveImage Protector 2.8 Linux Edition (hereinafter referred to as “ActiveImage Protector Linux Edition”).
Background
Linux has proven to be very popular OS because of its compact size and reasonable price. In recent years, virtualization is considered to be the top priority in enterprises while enterprise Linux adoption is on the rise because of sluggish economy. As the number of virtual machines increases, maintenance and support workload squarely falls on the shoulders of system administrators. In the meantime, the advent of secure and simple backup/restore solution which supports Linux environment has long been awaited. One of the reasons why there has been no such backup/restore solution is that it is very difficult to develop backup/restore solution which supports a number of Linux distributions and their upgraded versions.
Also, there is a problem in backup of Linux environment. The traditional backup methods of Linux system are “file-based” and “disk-dump”. First, since “file-based” backup/restore requires restoration of configurations and update, unless you are an expert in Linux, it may take some time to get familiar with it. Alternatively, “disk-dump” method which requires more time and disk space is not very efficient to use.
ActiveImage Protector Linux Edition, developed to address those issues, supports many of Linux distributions. ActiveImage Protector Linux Edition has command line interface which is easy to configure the settings and simple to operate. The use of Linux native snapshot driver enables to create “sector-based” backup image of hard disk or by volume without having to shut down the operating system. Unlike the traditional “disk dump”, ActiveImage Protector Linux Edition provides analysis of file system to exclude unused sectors from backup target. ActiveImage Protector Linux Edition enables fast backup with less disk space to back up only used sectors and create compressed backup image. These features of ActiveImage Protector Linux Edition help you reduce administrative burden.
What is ActiveImage Protector Linux Edition?
ActiveImage Protector Linux includes advanced disk imaging backup technologies for Linux environment which NetJapan, Inc. has accumulated over the years. The use of ActiveImage Protector Linux provides secure backup/restore on Linux server through simple operations and enables fast backup with less disk space by using Smart Sector to back up only used sectors with snapshot in Ext2/Ext3/Ext4 format.
The use of Linux native snapshot driver enables to create full backup of Linux server hard disk or by volume without having to shut down the operating system. ActiveImage Protector Linux Edition also supports bare metal recovery and provides the function to retrieve individual files in the backup image. ActiveImage Protector Linux Edition supports backup of LVM as well as volume type backup which facilitates backup in enterprise environment.
